1847 At the request of a clergyman, Placide Chapeau de Roquemaure, commissionaire of wine in France, penned the poem/lyrics to "Cantique de Noel". Adolphe Charles Adams was an accomplished composer, and a . Although Adams was Jewish and didn't celebrate Christmas, hecomposed the accompanying music at his friend's request. It premiered Christmas Eve at midnight mass. Its popularity quickly grew and was performed in many subsequent Catholic Christmas services. After learning who wrote the song, it was denounced by the Catholic church. "Because of its total absence of the spirit of religion". Despite the declaration of the church, the French continued to sing "Cantique de Noel"
